Talhoffers Fechtbuch

For the sixth print run of their book “Talhoffers Fechtbuch” VS-Books asked me to create a new transcription and also a new translation into modern German of the famous illustrated fencing manual by the equally famous master Hans Talhoffer. This manuscript in Early High German is dated to the year 1467 and ranks among the most accomplished achievements concerning late medieval fencing literature. The book is a reprint of Gustav Hergsell’s edition from 1887. His translation stems from his background as a classical fencer with a vastly different nomenclature. In order to stay a bit more true to the original text, the publishers chose to modernise their long-selling paperback edition. Here, on this website, I only offer the transcription—the printed volume on the other hand brings it together with the translation and the images. The illustrations, however, are available on the website of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.

I have dissolved the abbreviations in the transcription and clarified this with italics. A single missing portion of the text on fol. 13r—due to a damaged margin—was [replaced]. Comments or Additions are also set in [square brackets].

The book is available on the VS-Books website.
